EXAMPLE OF ACTIVITIES IN FRIENDLY DUBLIN

A selection of these activities will take place each day as part of the course, where indicated.

Welcome drink in Temple Bar where you will meet the staff and your colleagues in a typical Irish pub.

Historic walking tour of the city of Dublin, with an opportunity to practice English in a more informal setting, outside of the classroom.  It also familiarises participants with the geography and history of the city, with the opportunity of collecting authentic material for use in the classroom.

A visit to Trinity College with information on the contribution of alumni to Irish and international literature, the Book of Kells and an introduction on the influence of early Irish missionaries in Europe.

The Irish experience, CLIL – Irish language and Irish dance.

National Print museum, useful for planning field trips for projects.

National museum where participants will be able to relate fieldwork to class work.

Visit to National Gallery, ideal for sourcing material for developing speaking skills or collecting authentic material.

Visit to the Dublin Writers’ museum which includes an audio tour to develop listening skills. Further input on Irish literature and collecting authentic materials.

Visit to the cathedrals, exploring the history and influence of the main denominations in Ireland. (including author and poet Jonathan Swift).

Visit to the Chester Beatty library, where participants can source materials for developing writing skills in the classroom.

Trip to Glendalough and Wicklow mountains taking participants to the beautiful Wicklow mountains for a small hike to take in the scenery. We will also stop in Glendalough for a cultural visit.

Tour through the Guinness Brewery to learn about Irelands bestselling beer at the country’s most visited tourist attraction. Enjoy the beautiful views of the city from the observation deck with a cool Guinness straight from the factory.

Visit to the GPO 1916 exhibition, another opportunity to collect authentic texts.

Film in the classroom, in order to exploit film in the classroom using a contemporary Irish film as an example.
